Description & Analysis

This issue is common across most grades, and gems are somewhat more available than for 1887-88. Discriminating buyers will want one coined from unworn dies, as later strikes reveal die erosion. This is discernible by a grainy or pebbly surface which is most pronounced at the peripheries. The coin illustrated was sharply struck from fresh dies, though the troublesome corn cob is still incomplete.

1889 nickels have been found with several repunched date varities, but only one is noteworthy. This is recognized by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.
