Description & Analysis

The suspension of five-cent coinage that began in March 1885 was not lifted until the last quarter of 1886, resulting in another low-mintage date. It took that long for demand to pick up enough for the Mint to resume production.

Though overshadowed by the very scarce 1885 nickel, the 1886 edition is even more rare in Mint State. Gems are especially elusive, as little attention was paid to these coins by collectors who, until recent decades, simply preferred the more common proofs.

Several repunched date varieties are known for 1886, but these are not interesting enough to carry any premium value for this already expensive date.
