Description & Analysis

Though clearly more scarce than either of the 1883 issues, this date is certainly not rare. Mint State survivors typically have attractive luster of finely-grained frostiness and may show some die cracks. Like the example illustrated, most have some incompleteness in the stars and in the corn cob at the lower left of the wreath.

Several repunched date varieties are noted for this date, and these are listed and illustrated in a specialized book on this series by Kevin Flynn and Bill Van Note. The only was of more than passing interest is attributed by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.
