The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The years from 1900 through 1905 saw the largest production of proof Liberty gold coins at any time in the history of this design. Production in 1904, for instance, amounted to 136 Proofs, the fifth highest Proof mintage of the design. Although times may have changed, 25 years ago Walter Breen described this issue as a 'sleeper' meaning it was undervalued in relation to other dates of the series. Specifically, he made the comparison to 1903, a much more plentiful Proof issue yet with about the same market value.
