Description & Analysis

In the mid-1890s, production of half eagles at San Francisco sagged. In 1898 and 1899, mintages again exceeded a million pieces, but in 1900, the West Coast Mint struck only 329,000 pieces. Many were lost to attrition, and Garrett and Guth suggest that the issue '... is probably 10 times rarer than the 1900 Philadelphia issue.'
