The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
It is curious that most numismatists would consider this a 'common' coin, although one not commonly found in Gem condition. But, despite the fact that the 1899 was coined to the extent of more than 1.7 million pieces, NGC has graded fewer Gem examples of this issue than the 1898 or the 1900--coins with considerably smaller mintages. A possible explanation is that many collectors chose to save the 1900 coins, since they represented the turn of the century (except to purists), rather than the 1899 issue.
