The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Struck in a year when large quantities of gold ore at the San Francisco Mint went into the production of double eagles, seemingly a more efficient way of coining its supply on hand. Demand for smaller denominations and a limited mintage of 13,220 half eagles have resulted in the 1859-S five being even scarcer than its mintage would suggest, especially in lesser worn grades.
