The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1854-C is one of the most difficult Charlotte Fives from this decade, although equal attention has often been accorded to C-mints of lesser rarity. Just 39,283 pieces were struck and the number of Mint State survivors probably tops out at half dozen or so pieces, with several of these falling under the 'Weak Mintmark' category.
