The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
No Motto half eagles were not chased by collectors until decades later, and although they were held for their bullion value, such pieces were indifferently stored and spent during hard times. No great effort is required to obtain examples of the 1847 in AU55 or AU58, but Uncirculated pieces are scarce, and the issue becomes rare at the MS64 level.
