The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
In 1839 the design of the half eagle was changed to feature Gobrecht's new stylization of Liberty. Although this basic type lasted for many decades, noticeable alterations were made in 1840, which makes the 1839 a popular representative not only because it was a first-year issue, but also due to its status as a one-year type. The mintmark was moved to the reverse with the 1840 issue, and the hairbun was slightly modified.
