Description & Analysis

This date is clearly much scarcer than it is given credit for, and when encountered, it is usually only found in VF or XF grades, and occasionally in the lowest AU grades. Winter and Crum commented, for example: 'The 1855 double eagle is usually viewed as a common date. It is actually quite scarce in any grade better than About Uncirculated-53 and it is a truly rare coin in Uncirculated grades.' Although the recovery of coins from the S.S. Republic has changed the scene for Type One double eagles over the past couple years, this issue remains elusive in top grades.
