The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The mintage of 1888 quarter eagles (16,001 circulation strikes) was considerably larger than for the 1880 through 1887 issues, yet it is elusive within the context of 19th century gold. Lower Mint State examples can be located with patience and searching, but the date is quite scarce in near-Gem. Gem specimens are rare.
