The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1847-D is just a bit less available than the 1846-D in terms of overall rarity. In higher grades, the 1847-D is quite rare but it is seen more often than the 1843-D or the 1846-D. An estimated eight to ten Uncirculated pieces exist.
