The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
With a mintage of nearly 20,000 pieces, the 1846-D is one of the more available Dahlonega quarter eagles. There are 175-200 coins known with at least three-quarters of these in the Very Fine to Extremely Fine grade range. Low-end AU coins are reasonably easy to find, but the 1846-D becomes a challenging issue in the higher AU grades and a major rarity in Uncirculated. Only four or five Mint State coins are currently known.
