The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1899 eagle is a high-mintage issue, produced to the extent of more than 1.26 million pieces. Garrett and Guth, in their gold Encyclopedia, write that the 1899 is a 'super-common date that can be found quite easily in all Mint State grades up through MS-64. Gem examples are 'money coins,' (i.e., with enough money, one can always find an example of this date.'
