The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1896-S is one of three S-mint eagles produced in the mid-1890s that are difficult to locate in all Mint State grades, the others being the 1894-S and 1895-S. The '96-S boasts the highest mintage of this trio, with 123,750 pieces produced. Nonetheless, Akers does not hesitate to describe the 1896-S as 'one of the most underrated and underappreciated of all U.S. gold coins.'
