The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
In the higher grades, this is one of the elusive Carson City Mint eagles from a mintage of just 17,500 coins. Few of those have survived in Mint State grades.
The Carson City Mint was silenced in 1885 and did not resume production again until 1889. As Rusty Goe noted in his excellent reference The Mint on Carson Street: 'From 1885 to 1889, when the Carson Mint was dark, certain mine owners from the Comstock region pledged to make deposits at the local facility if the Treasury would revive coining operations there. Yields on gold ore had been moderately consistent throughout the last six years of the 1880s, and by 1890 more than $1.5 million worth of gold had been deposited at Carson City, more than adequate to begin minting coins again.' Collectors of Carson City Mint coinage are encourage to acquire a copy of Mr. Goe's reference which covers the entire history of that Mint and all denominations of coinage it produced. When coinage continued in 1889, the Carson City Mint produced only silver dollars and double eagles. It was not until 1890 that half eagles and eagles were minted again.
