The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Produced from 1838-1907, the Liberty eagle series witnessed the production of numerous scarce and rare issues. With an original mintage of 253,527 pieces, the 1885 certainly does not seem like an especially noteworthy date. Indeed, examples of this delivery are easily obtainable in the circulated and average Mint State grades. Above the BU grade level, however, this issue becomes as rare as the lower mintage 1887 (53,680 pieces produced) and 1891 (91,868 pieces produced).
