The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1880-O is the most available of the trio of scarce New Orleans eagles struck between 1880 and 1882. We believe that, from an original mintage of 9,200 pieces, around 200-250 examples are extant. Although this issue is relatively easy to locate in grades up to an including AU 53, its scarcity becomes evident at the Choice About Uncirculated grade tier. In Mint State, the 1880-O eagle is prohibitively rare with just five to seven pieces known.
