Description & Analysis

The Liberty Bust employed for 1793 half cents was replaced for 1794 with one that conformed more closely to the current cents. Robert Scot prepared hubs based upon Josesph Wright's design with Liberty facing right, and there were two basic types: the Normal Head and the High Relief Head. Two types of wreath were employed, as well, but these are seldom noted by catalogers or sought by collectors.

The wreath was greatly simplified from that utilized in 1793 to reduce the engraver's workload. Its main features were hubbed into each working die, with only minor touch-ups to the leaves and berries being necessary. As before, all lettering and numerals were hand-punched into each.

There are nine die marriages known for this date, with Cohen varieties C-1 through C-6 each found with either large or small edge letters. These six marriages all feature the Normal Head (C-4a illustrated), while the three High-Relief Head varieties have uniformly small edge lettering.

The half cents of 1794 may be lumped together by type collectors with those of 1795-97, but their features are distinctive enough that an advanced collector will want to own examples of each subtype.
