Description & Analysis

With a mintage of 3.4 million coins, the 1909-D is easily the most plentiful date in the entire Indian half eagle series. Examples are available in nearly any grade desired, up to MS65. Higher-grade coins, such as this Premium Gem, will prove elusive to even the most serious students of the series. In A Handbook of 20th-Century United States Gold Coins 1907-1933, David Akers wrote in 1988: 'True gems are genuinely rare and superb (better than MS-65) quality examples are essentially unobtainable.' Those words are equally true today, more than 20 years later.
