Description & Analysis

With silver coins worth more than their face value in green backs and thus unable to circulate, the Mint cranked out vast numbers of cents during 1863 in an attempt to provide small change. The mintage for 1863 cents set a record for a single emission that lasted until 1890. Desperate merchants took to bagging these coins in amounts of 25 or 50 cents as replacements for quarters and halves, a practice that lasted until fractional paper money filled the void.

With nearly 50 million cents coined in 1863, the dies were overworked, and many examples surviving in Mint State show noticeable die erosion. Examples in all grades short of MS-65 are nonetheless plentiful.
