Description & Analysis

By 1860 the Mint's program of retiring the old copper cents and half cents was largely complete, and merchants began to complain about a redundancy of the new small cents. These coins were not redeemable at the Treasury, so the existing stock forced a reduction in the number minted for 1860.

A mintage of 20+ million coins was still fairly large for the times, so this issue is not rare in any grade short of MS-65. Most examples are well struck and have pleasing luster.

A major variety for this date displays the old style bust used in 1859, with a pointed tip to Liberty's bust (photos). Just a few working dies were hubbed from this bust before a new one was adopted having a rounded tip, and the majority of 1860 cents have the rounded bust.
