Description & Analysis

Although the mint issued the first Type Three gold dollars in 1856, the first examples were not struck in Charlotte until the following year. It is interesting that while the 1857-C dollar's mintage of 13,280 pieces is on the high side when compared to most dates in the series, this issue is among the rarest in Mint State. This is partially because the 1857-C is, on average, one of the worst produced gold coins in United States history, which is a major reason for the lack of high grade specimens. Only a select few examples have been certified in Mint State, with none above MS62.
