Description & Analysis

Although this issue's original mintage of 11,515 pieces is generous for a Gold Dollar from the Charlotte Mint, the absence of an 1854-C delivery suggests that the 1853-C suffered an uncommonly high rate of attrition through circulation. Indeed, examples in today's market are nearly as rare as those of the lower mintage 1852-C delivery.
