The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The '52-O is the rarest Type One Gold Dollar after the 1850-O. While Winter's 1992 estimate of 19-20 coins extant in Mint State is probably no longer accurate, there can be no doubt that the 1852-O remains a conditionally challenging issue with a rapidly dwindling certified population above the MS62 level.
