The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The Grant Memorial gold dollar was initially issued with a star beneath the last A in AMERICA, and then removed. The gold dollars without star were sold for $3 each beginning in April 1922. All were eventually distributed. Most of the 5,016 no star specimens are very lustrous and frosty and are in higher grades, through MS66. Superb Gems become scarce.
