Description & Analysis

No Flying Eagle Cents were coined for general circulation in 1856, but a few hundred proofs were coined for inspection by members of Congress. It was their decision whether to discontinue the large copper cents coined since 1793 and replace them with the proposed small, copper-nickel cent. This law ultimately passed, but not in time to mass produce small cents during 1856.

Once collectors became aware of these experimental cents dated 1856, the demand for them prompted the Mint to strike additional examples over the next two-three years until such restriking became an embarrassment. It's believed that anywhere from 2,000 to 2,500 were coined in all, though no accurate records exist.

There are several varieties of 1856 cents, reinforcing the belief that these were coined on different occasions. Few collectors seek these varieties, as any 1856 Flying Eagle Cent is popular enough to be expensive.

Some researchers have argued that one or more of these varieties were coined as currency pieces (MS), but NGC's position is that all were proofs of widely varying quality.
