Description & Analysis

Four obverse dies were paired with a single reverse die to create the four die marriages of the Chain Cent having AMERICA spelled in full. S-2 (photos), S-3 and S-4 are all scarce, while NC-1 is among the rarest of all early cents.

A total of 36,103 Chain Cents were coined March 1-12 of 1793. How this mintage breaks down into varieties isn't known, but all examples are desirable to type collectors.

All of the obverse dies features very shallow engraving which led to the Liberty portrait being worn away quickly. It's quite common to find cents of this type that are identifiable solely by the Chain device, which is much bolder in the die.
