The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Only 16,000 quarters are believed to have been struck with the 1824 date. The new Tompkins reference on early quarters proposes an alternate theory regarding this date. It states that, 'the quantity of 16,000 coins delivered in Warrant #935 on December 31st 1823 were actually dated 1824. The amount of coins and the frequency of their appearance seem to concur with this hypothesis.
'As Robert Scot passed away on November 1st. 1823, this may have been one of the last dies he produced. Another theory would be that after Scot died, Christian Gobrecht was immediately hired to help out, and perhaps it was Gobrecht who over-dated the unused 1822 die to create the 1824/2 as well as re-engraved the reverse die that was used to coin the 1823 B-1 die marriage, which was incomplete at the arrowheads and arrow shafts. William Kneass was commissioned as the new Chief engraver on January 29th, 1824 to replace Robert Scot, therefore due to the date of the delivery warrant, he was certainly not the person responsible for this 1824/2 die. 'Furthermore, it may be that long with the one 1824/2 obverse die, Gobrecht over-dated two other 1822 dated obverse dies with a 4 over the 2. A recent discovery that the 1825 B-1 obverse die, which has always been called an 1825/2 is in reality an 1825/4/2, sparked this theory.?
