Description & Analysis

The first production of half dimes since 1805 occurred on July 4, 1829 and coincided with the laying of the new mint building's cornerstone. It has been estimated that perhaps 20 proofs of the 1829 half dime were coined for the occasion, and this is among the more often seen dates of proof Capped Bust Half Dimes.

Several LM marriages have been reported as proofs, but it's likely that only a single die pair was used for true proofs. The others are almost certainly prooflike pieces coined from dies that were refinished to remove clash marks and other flaws.
