Description & Analysis

The mintage of 1795 dimes includes those dated 1794, but this is by far the more often seen date. A fair number of Mint State pieces survive from an old hoard distributed in the 1880s by coin dealer W. E. Woodward. As a two-year-only type coin, these hoard specimens are highly prized.

Early half dimes are often irregularly struck, with some portions of the design sharp and others quiet weak. This is evident on both Mint State and well worn examples.

Eight obverse dies were paired in various combinations with five reverses to create a total of 10 die marriages. The ones most often seen in high grades are LM-8, -9 and -10. Until publication of the Logan-McCloskey book in 1998 the standard reference for half dimes was Daniel Valentine's 1931 monograph and subsequent updates, and many half dimes that come onto the market from old collections may be attributed by Valentine numbers

Rare varieties for this date include LM-1 and LM-3 through -7, while the rarest of all is LM-2. The coin illustrated is an example of LM-4.
