Description & Analysis

All of the 1794 half dimes were actually coined during March of 1795, as the early U. S. Mint was not in a position to discard dies just because they were outdated. These formed a minority of the total mintage reported for 1795, and all 1794-dated pieces are scarce to varying degrees. While Mint State examples are rare, a number were evidently preserved as souvenirs of the novel coinage.

Three obverse dies were mixed with three reverses for a total of four die marriages, and these are cataloged by Logan-McCloskey varieties. LM-1 (photos) and LM-2 are rare, while LM-3 and LM-4 are more often seen.
