Description & Analysis

The great availability of 1834-dated dimes relative to the reported mintage suggests that additional pieces were coined as part of 1835's production. Mint State pieces are plentiful, with even gems being more available than for dates before 1833.

Three of the four obverse dies used for 1834 dimes bore a Large 4 that progressively deteriorated until just a nub remained of the horizontal stroke right of the vertical stroke. A single Small 4 die was used toward the end of production and is notably more scarce. These obverses were paired with six reverse dies, and the result was a total of seven die marriages for the date. JR-1, -5, -6 and -7 are common, but JR-2 (photos), and JR-4 are slightly scarce. The toughest one is JR-3, rated R-5 by the John Reich Collectors Society.
