Description & Analysis

As always with mintage figures for USA coins before 1836, it's uncertain how many of the dimes reportedly coined this year were actually dated 1831. There is circumstantial evidence that one variety of 1829 dime (JR-12) was probably coined during 1831.

Three obverse dies were paired with five reverses to create a total of six die marriages. The reverse dies used this year feature either three or two vertical lines to represent each shield stripe. The number was reduced to two in an attempt to make the stripes more durable, and the two-line stripe remained standard for the remainder of this series.

No varieties of this date are rare, with only JR-2 and JR-6 being slightly scarce. JR-1 is illustrated here.

Mint State survivors are fairly plentiful for this date, with even gems in sufficient supply to provide for both date and type collectors.
