Description & Analysis

Starting this year the transition from the Reich designs to the Kneass interpretation of them was more or less complete. As with the 1828 dimes, however, some of those date 1829 represent a compromise between the old style and new styles. The new reverse has a finely beaded border and narrow rims, yet three die marriages included the old style reverse with its broad denticles. Again, the Mint was not going to discard useable dies just because they were obsolete in style.

The published mintage figure above is for calendar year 1829, but it's believed that additional pieces were struck with this date during 1830. Mint State examples of the more common varieties survive in good numbers, but few of these qualify as gems.

Six obverses were paired with no fewer than 11 reverses to produce a dozen die marriages of 1829 dimes. These vary according to the size of the figures in 10 C.

Common varieties include JR-2, -4 and -7 (photos). More scarce are JR-1, -3, -8 -5, -6, -8, -9, -11 and -12. The scarcest die marriage is JR-10, the highly sought Curled Base 2 variety.
