Description & Analysis

The small number of dimes produced with the date 1822 led to two other 1822-dated dies being leftover and available for 1823's coinage. These were both overdated, with traces of a 2 remaining underneath the 3. They were paired with two reverse dies for a total of three known marriages. The reverse dies are distinguished by having either Large E's or Small E's in the legend, but there is little collector interest in these varieties.

JR-1 and JR-3 (photos) are both common, while JR-2 is rare. A fair number of Mint State examples survive for this date, but gems are quite rare.
