Description & Analysis

After a six-year break in dime coinage, the U. S. Mint really went to town in 1820. Nearly a million pieces were produced. This high mintage saw eight obverses paired with nine reverses for a total of 13 known die marriages.

These varieties have traditionally been grouped into those having a Small 0 in the date and those having a Large 0, but interest in such varieties is actually quite limited. The most popular variety is JR-1, which utilized the leftover 1814 die reading STATESOFAMERICA. Of course, it's also possible that the 1814 version was actually coined in 1820 with a still useable 1814 obverse die.

JR-7 is, along with JR-13, the most commonly seen variety. JR-1, -2 (photos), -3, -5, -6, -8, -9, -10 and -11 are slightly scarce, while JR-4 and JR-12 are both rare, the latter especially so.

There are quite a number examples within the lower Mint State grades, but gems are few and far between.
