Description & Analysis

The dimes dated 1809 were coined both in that year and in the latter half of 1810, some 6,355 pieces being added at that time, though no dies dated 1810 were used.

Assistant Engraver John Reich prepared the hubs for this type, which was a reduction of his half dollar first coined in 1807. A single die pair produced all of the 1809 dimes. The addition of a value reading "10 C." signaled the end of die sharing with the quarter eagle.

1809 dimes are moderately scarce in all grades and genuinely rare in Mint State. Most have shallow or incomplete border denticles, and this date is frequently seen slightly off-centered.
