Description & Analysis

The co-authors of the book Early United States Dimes 1796-1837 (the JR book) described this date as "probably the most unappreciated of the draped bust dime series." The published Mint record almost certainly includes dimes dated 1802, and the JR authors estimated the actual of 1803-dated dimes figure at 10,000 to 12,000 pieces.

Two obverse dies and four reverses were combined to produce a total of five die marriages. None of these is common, but JR-3 (photos) is the one most often encountered. JR-2 and JR-4 are rare, while JR-1 and JR-5 (discovered after publication of the book) are both very rare. Mint State examples of any variety are also quite rare.
