Description & Analysis

Just two die marriages are known for 1802 half cents, and this is the only one which is readily collectable. It is scarce, but its rarity pales in comparison to that of Cohen-1.

This variety shares a common obverse die with C-1, and it reveals a very obvious 2/0 overdate. Its reverse die is of the new style first employed with 1797 cents in which the wreath has fuller leaves, and its upper right terminus displays two leaves in place of the single leaf.

The number of C-2 half cents coined is uncertain, but it has long been speculated that these comprised the two deliveries of the year 1802 which totaled 14,366 pieces. It's also possible that some of those coined in 1803 included this variety, too, which would account for its prevalence as compared to C-1.
