Description & Analysis

Though the main devices of Liberty's bust and the wreath were hubbed into each working die, these dies still required that some features be added by hand. Among these were the stems pointing downward at a diagonal angle from the wreath knot.

On two dies for 1797 cents the engraver failed to perform this step, and these dies were paired with four obverse dies, resulting in five marriages. These range from scarce to rare, with the greatest rarity being NC-8. All of these marriages carry a premium over the normal varieties. S-131 is illustrated.
