Description & Analysis

Newcomb's variety 1 is a scarce coin and one very highly sought by collectors. It is the only issue of this date to utilize the obsolete Head of 36 Liberty bust with its plain hair cord. This proves that instead of simply having numeral 9 punched over an inverted 9, it is actually a leftover die dated 1836 and then updated for use three years later.

The overdate is a bit difficult to distinguish, appearing more as just a malformed 9. The fact that this variety is usually found well worn only aggravates this situation, yet the unique bust style makes attribution a simple matter. It's doubtful that more than one or two Mint State examples survive.
