Description & Analysis

The cents dated 1837 are common in all grades through Mint State, with brown examples being fairly plentiful, while those showing satisfying degrees of red-brown color may also be secured with a bit of searching.

1837 is another year in which several dies were transitional between older and newer styles. All feature Gobrecht's revised Liberty bust of 1835, but some have plain hair cords (Head of 36), while a few have beaded cords (Head of 38). These are combined with reverse dies having either the older Medium Letters or the new Small Letters.

In total there are 16 die marriages for 1837 (N-7 proved to be just a later die state of N-8 and is illustrated above). None of the three combinations are rare as a class, but individually scarce die marriages include N-1, N-12 and N-14 through -17.
