The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
Although due to the much larger mintage of 18,140 coins the 1839-C is more 'common' than the 1838-C quarter eagle, it is still quite scarce and in demand from type collectors. Accordingly, the supply is under intense pressure. Nice examples always command considerable premiums whenever they appear on the market.
