Description & Analysis

As was true of Buffalo Nickels since 1935, the year 1938 resulted in numerous repunched mintmark varieties. Those that are distinctive enough to carry some premium value are attributed by number by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service. In addition, the more obvious ones will be labeled as simply D/D under regular grading tiers if requested on the submission form, but this category does not distinguish the specific dies.

As a class, 1938 D/D nickels are not rare, since so many of this date were set aside by the roll when new. The relative values of each specific variety may vary. The example illustrated is one of the better ones, FS-502.
