Description & Analysis

When the sale of proof coins resumed in 1936 after a 20-year hiatus, the Philadelphia Mint had to devise a new procedure for preparing both dies and planchets. The so-called "matte" proofs of 1913-16 had been unpopular in their own time, and a more appealing product was sought.

The first proof cents and nickels shipped to collectors in 1936 had a satiny, semi-brilliant finish that was accompanied by a superior strike. Such coins were obviously better than currency pieces, but collectors still complained that they weren't fully brilliant like the proof nickels coined 1866-1912.

The satin proof edition of 1936 is now almost as highly sought as the succeeding brilliant proof, and in some respects they are superior. A sophisticated numismatist will appreciate the full rendering of Fraser's design that was lost in part when the mint overpolished the dies to give them the desired brilliance.

This issue, though it is more scarce than the brilliant edition, has a fair number of gem survivors. Only at the highest grades is it quite rare, but that is true of most U. S. Mint proofs dated 1936-42.
