Description & Analysis

After years of making mediocre coins, the Denver Mint took the lead in averaging the finest pieces overall from 1936 through much of the 1950s. Most 1936 D nickels were thus well made, with good to superior strikes and excellent luster, though the example above illustrates this point rather poorly. It was weakly struck from quite eroded dies, proving that for every rule there is the exception.

This is another issue that is quite rich in repunched mintmarks, at least 15 being known. The better of these are attributed by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service. A doubled-die reverse is also known, but it is so subtle as to be of almost no interest to collectors.
