Description & Analysis

In the 1980s five extraordinary 1927 Philadelphia Mint nickels surfaced, and these were clearly not of conventional striking. Each was fully struck and possessed satiny surfaces quite unlike normal mint luster but somewhat similar to the satin finish used for the early proofs of 1936. As no proofs were known to have been struck in 1927, NGC elected to certify these coins as Specimen (SP) strikings.

The Annual Report of the Director of the Mint for Fiscal Year 1928, which encompassed the period July 1, 1927 through June 30, 1928, recorded experiments with the chromium plating of dies, and it has been speculated that these coins were a test of this procedure. As the unpublished Mint records for that period were evidently destroyed around 1979-80, it is impossible to confirm this connection, but these five nickels stand on their own merits.
