Description & Analysis

James E. Fraser's splendid design suffered its worst year in 1925, as the Mint's Engraving Department couldn't even create an obverse master die that didn't have problems. In addition to lacking sharp definition, this master was also slightly doubled at the left hair ribbon. This feature transferred to all working hubs and dies for all three mints.

The Philadelphia Mint edition of the 1925 nickel is certainly the best of the three, but it is never quite fully struck. All pieces have an overall softness on the obverse in particular, with the first two numerals of the date being less than fully raised on most coins. Luster is also a bit disappointing on 1925(P) nickels--frosty, but a bit subdued. The example illustrated is about as good as this issue comes.
